What is the difference between the two?
The main difference in functionality between the two is that a heat pump can cool and or heat your home whereas an air conditioner can only cool. The heat pump extracts heat from the cold outside air and transfers it inside our home using Electricity and refrigerant.
Which is more energy efficient?
Heat pumps provide energy efficient heating in moderate conditions using electricity but when conditions get cooler, they need to use more electricity which can offset the savings. The way around this is to have a furnace work in conjunction with the heat pump to create a dual fuel system. This method is more expensive initially but pays off down the road.
